Honda’s Walking Assist with Stride Management: Coming to a Hospital Near You!

If, that is, you’re connected to one of 50 Japanese medical institutions now testing and evaluating a pair of the semi-robotic exoskeletal assistive devices. Honda breaks down the what’s-it-do-and-how as follows:

“The [Walking Assist Device’s] control computer activates motors based on information obtained from hip angle sensors while walking to improve the symmetry of the timing of each leg lifting from the ground and extending forward, and to promote a longer stride for an easier walk.”

Honda’s worked closely with several medical institutions throughout development of the Walking Assist Device, but last week’s announcement of the 100-unit roll-out signals what is effectively their flagship field testing effort; a medical trial to collect feedback and evaluations from professionals and patients, and data from the devices themselves, of course. But it’s much sexier than your average medical trial. Because robots. Obviously.
Each rehabilitation and/or physical therapy-focused recipient medical facility gets one medium- and one large-sized device. Details on the cost and duration of the leases haven’t been disclosed, but we do have the following specs:




If successful, the devices will very likely see wider domestic trials, possibly moving beyond rehabilitation and making their way into the homes of Japan’s rapidly aging population. In addition to recovery, the Walking Assist Device could provide just the boost needed for walking to the grocery store, visiting a friend or family member, a healthy stroll around the shopping center, or, for Japan’s endangered farming population, 50% of whom are within 5-10 years of retirement, another trip out to the field.
Given sufficient demand, and should they be cheap enough to produce, the Walking Assist Devices could perhaps be enlarged for populations a bit more… uhhh, let’s be nice and say “a bit more robust.” Among other developed nations, the U.S. also has a growing population of retirees who’d definitely appreciate the extra spring in their step. But Honda, remember, you’re going to need some bigger springs. Sorry about that. It’s a problem. Sorry.

Honda’s Ongoing Assistive Robotics Commitment – Respect Due:

While Honda began specific work on walking-assist devices in 1999, the devices weren’t widely public until 2009. Differences between the current and early iterations are visible in the main image above: on the right and left are the earlier, bulkier, more metallic devices – the middle image, included in last week’s press release, shows the sleeker, current model (the middle image has actually been out in the wild for at least a year, so one assumes the 50 medium and 50 large devices now shipping are the same, possibly with some under-the-hood upgrades and/or modifications).

Unless you’re of a certain level of robo-dorkiness, you might not know that Honda’s actually been pounding away on bipedal humanoid robotics tech since the mid-1980s. You might be unaware of their proactive efforts toward addressing Japan’s aging population crisis through assistive robotics (Akihabara News coverage). And, you could have missed news that Honda’s pursuing a robotics-in-the-home partnership with Sekisui House (even more Akihabara News coverage!).*

Cars, ATVs, a lawnmower perhaps, maybe a sprinkling of ASIMO – that’s the standard mental image of Honda.

Roman Ruins in Britain Hailed as “Pompeii of the North”

Archeologists digging at Binchester Roman Fort near Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England have unearthed a treasure trove of Roman artifacts and buildings dating back more than 1,800 years. Lauded as some of the best-preserved Roman ruins this side of Pompeii, the site has produced an ancient bathhouse, an altar to the goddess Fortuna and a piece of jewelry that offers early evidence of Christianity in Roman Britain.

Known as “Vinovia” to the Romans, the outpost once commanded the crossroads of the River Wear and Dere Street, an ancient road that linked the Roman headquarters at York with Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall near Edinburgh, Scotland. Researchers with the Binchester excavation project have been digging at the fort since 2009, and they now say the site includes some of the most exquisitely preserved ruins ever unearthed in Britain. “These findings are hugely significant as they are virtually intact and present a graphic illustration of life under the Roman Empire,” said Dr. David Mason, principal archeologist with the Durham County Council, in a press release. “They are so stunning and spectacular that we can claim we have our very own ‘Pompeii of the north’ right on our doorstep.”
Chief among the discoveries is an 1,800-year-old Roman bathhouse that would have served as the hub of the fort’s social and recreational life. The baths still feature original floors, windows and doorways, and plaster shards indicate that their seven-foot-high walls were once adorned with colorful designs and drawings. “The most unique feature of these remains is the sheer scale of their preservation,” said Dr. David Petts, archeologist at Durham University. “It is possible to walk through a series of Roman rooms with walls all above head height; this is pretty exceptional for Roman Britain.” Further digging in the bathhouse uncovered evidence of plumbing, including a drain and gaps in the walls that may have once held lead piping to channel water.
In an adjacent changing room, the archeologists excavated a carved stone altar to Fortune the Home-Bringer, one of several aspects of Fortuna, the Roman goddess of luck, chance and fate. The altar bears an inscription by a trooper garrisoned at the fort with a unit of Spanish cavalry. The etching identifies his rank as “architectus,” offering some of the first evidence that military architects may have operated on staff at provincial Roman outposts.
Excavations at the Binchester site have also yielded a silver ring with an engraving that features two fish dangling from an anchor, often considered an early symbol of Christianity. The design appears widely in Roman artifacts, but the researchers say the ring is only the second time it has cropped up in Britain. Dr. Petts dates the jewelry to the 3rd century A.D.—long before the Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313. “This is a surprisingly early date for a Christian object in Britain,” he notes on the project’s blog. “Evidence for Roman Christianity is rare in Northern England, and evidence for Pre-Constantinian Christianity is even rarer.”
With its commanding views of the nearby road and river, the fort at Binchester was one of the most vital of the five Roman bastions that once operated in County Durham. The site was constructed from timber sometime around A.D. 80. on the orders of Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman Governor of Britain. It was later fortified and rebuilt from stone during the Antonine period in the second century. The newer citadel included a hospital and several barracks, workshops and granaries, but it wasn’t merely a military outpost. From their guard towers, Roman legionaries would have been able to watch a “vicus,” or civilian settlement, emerge alongside their fort. Evidence shows this upstart village continued on long after the fall of the Roman Empire. A nearby 7th century church is even built from looted stone that once belonged to the Binchester fort.
References to the ruins date back to the 1500s, but the first organized study of the Binchester fort didn’t take place until the late 19th century, when John Proud and the Reverend R.E. Hoopell unearthed a 4th century praetorium, or officer’s headquarters, and an adjacent bathhouse. The current Binchester excavation is a joint endeavor between the Durham County Council, the University of Durham, the Architectural and Archaeological Society of Northumberland and Durham and several other institutions. Now in its sixth year, the project has focused on excavating a pair of trenches dug at the site. The better preserved of the two trenches houses the altar and the bathhouse, both of which appear to have been converted into a trash heap in the late-Roman period. The other site features a section of the tower wall, a cavalry barracks, horse stables, bread ovens and a latrine. Petts hopes these finds can serve as a window onto the world of both the fort and the village that once flourished beyond its walls. “Our excavations have uncovered parts of one of the best preserved Roman buildings in Britain,” he said in the press release. “The building itself and the wonderful array of artifacts we have recovered from Binchester give us an unparalleled opportunity to better understand life on the northern frontier in the Roman period.”
The recent discoveries are not the first significant artifacts associated with the Binchester project. In July 2013, an archeology student working at the site unearthed a 1,800-year-old carved stone head that may be one of the few depictions of the Romano-British god Antenociticus.

NaN: NOT a Number…..

NaN is not short for Nanny, but Mathematical Slang to indicate that some value is not a Number. Since I'm in a playful mood, and inspiration was running rampant this afternoon on the train home, we'll start off with a limerick:

I once knew a lady named Anaïs Nin,

Who wrote all she wrote about cardinal sin.

She always took the Kama Sutra to bed,

But had this objection to using her head.

For that, the young lady had mine instead....

Point is, I mentioned the Kama Sutra yesterday as a training field for teaching the ancients to recognize humans in various close configurations as being harmless. Because of the vastness of the displayed Twister configurations, I figured traces of it's use should be still widely in use in the current epoch, possibly even in fields of interest we consider something entirely different.

And there is. Combine Yin and Yang with Natural Numbers: almost any human in the western world knows what 69 means. Notice the similarity in form to the Yin and Yang? It was actually miss Nin that put me up to the idea, one of the few moments we both used our heads! 


But there is more. First of all, 69 can only be relating to homosexual couples. Because otherwise it would be an 83 if it was a hetero configuration with an aggresive male, or a 38 with a dead or uncooperative male. 11 would be a platonic relationship, whereas 12 and 21 are configurations with one silent and one talkative partner. 88 is Anaïs favorite, two females open to anything. Isn't that any man's dream?

There must be more, but these are left as an exercise to the reader....

Beloved ones, it doesn't matter what name you call Me, or even if you believe in Me at all. While the mind might reach for explanations, the heart knows that I Am Real. I Am the center of your life and of your being. I Am the strands of Light from which you are woven.

If you allow Me now, I will activate your heart, that each of you might find yourself alive in Me, experiencing the life that I make and experiencing Love as the truth of your being. Then, your heart will walk with Me through everything that the world of the mind presents and you will be free, for I will feed you from this Love and your heart will free you to live in this abundance that never ends.


This, beloved ones, is the only shift that must be made. There is nothing that you need to figure out, for the moment that you allow your heart to fully open, then your experience of life will change. Until now you have been perceiving this Shift to the Heart through the perceptual filters of your ego-mind. When you allow your heart to become the center through which you live, then all that you see and experience will be founded in this endless peace, this Love, this beauty and the fecundity of God.

I Am life making more of itself. I Am Love knowing itself expanded and if you walk with Me with an active and open heart, then everything reveals this endless beauty that we create together. Walk with Me as the center of your life and being and no matter what the world says is before you, Love will clear the path and bring you everything.

Love will feed you and bring you all you need to know the truth through the vehicle of Love, the center of your being that is all you need to fund your life from pure Creation consciousness, to create as My heart with the power of never-ending Love. As the open heart of God I Am, you give to everyone, everything that Love brings forth as gifts to them.

So, your eyes might see a world that is filled with confusion and your mind might say that many good things failed, but as the active heart, the center of Creation, the vision of Love reveals the deeper truth of God and shows you the miracle of awakening life in every person, in every molecule, in every atom that dances the joy of harmony engaged in Making Love, until every breath is stunning in its majesty and you know yourself as the heart of All I Am. Knowing yourself, then each of you then knows Me, reflected as the world through Love's perfect vision.

Each person is revealed to be the mystery of the heart of Love unveiled. Even those things, beloved ones, that the mind sees as filled with fearful possibilities, the heart shall show you as the potential of Love to break free from the cage of dualistic seeing through the recognition that I Am Love and only Love is Real. I Am the strength that brings you easily to greater freedom, as you allow the active heart to reveal the most amazing life and it is your own.

I promise you, My dearest and most precious ones, as you step in tune with Me, heart active and open, you can literally walk through mine fields of every kind -- be they physical, mental or emotional -- and I, God, I who Am Creator -- shall guide your every step that you might find that right between the polarities of the ego's world is the beacon of the heart that guides your every step.

In these times of great change, Love's perfect guidance, the tender way you hear My voice, the reassurance of My presence and of your strength in Me will bring you through every challenge effortlessly. But so much more than this will always be revealed, for right between the polarities of ego, the active heart releases the dream of "not enough" -- frees everything and everyone it touches, brings back the purity of the surrendered life and the endless effervescent supply of life that feeds your consciousness, creates true heart awareness and wraps the world in the unity of this Love.

Step by step I Am present here and guiding you, and bringing you the gift of Love with every touch. Each life you see, each person you bless, everything that comes into your sphere of influence is effortlessly entrained to this perfection of Love, raised up to the highest and purest vibration of God that your vision which through the mind has ever been looking down…looking at the world it has made, the ground you walk upon … that this might fall away in an instant as the heart comes online.

The heart raises you up from your knees upon which you have been worshipping Me, be this figuratively or realistically, and opens you into your endless experience of yourself as the pure heart of all Creation, the heart of Love, the center of All I Am. In that instant that is Now, the assurance comes that there is no question that I Am always providing for you, for what life doesn't nourish the heart within it?

This Shift to the Heart, this joyous Heart Activation changes your experience of life right now and brings you the ongoing moment of pure bliss as you know yourself as the orgasmic heart of Creation itself and you become the vehicle through which I love.

Oh, dear ones, you finally know you are My heart giving. You are ever and always the pure and open conduit of Love. You are singing forth the truth of every being that one moment in the presence of this active heart, alive in you, bring effortless entrainment, bringing every life into its perfect place in the dance and bringing the acceptance of all these endless gifts.

So if you find yourself beholding the world in trepidation, if you feel those waves of fear rising up, if the duality play of daily life hooks you again, simply return and choose to live the heart, to be the heart of God I Am, integrated soulfully, so that only Love's Will moves you.

Just as you breathe, so too do you absorb this Love, taking it in, allowing it to feed you, receiving Love's atomic power to fuel your life and letting your active heart bring the expansion of Love and the consciousness of Love itself, until you are the experience of the ecstasy of extending this gift of God -- until you feel yourself interwoven with Me perfectly, until you know yourself as this heart, this conduit of Love given to you, that you might accept your true identity and all that Love provides.

What I Am saying here to each of you is that I Am more than enough. I Am the Source of all you are and of all you need, not only to sustain your life but to allow the very riches of Creation itself to burst forth in freedom and to know the truth as power and beauty, grace and peace and unending Love live as the truth of your being through our communion, by whatever name you call Me.

Whatever definitions you have held, dear ones, let this Love supersede them all through direct experience. Please let Me in. Let Me come and touch your heart. Let Me electrify it. Let Me throw open the doorway of heart perception and please, let the Will of Love I Am be fulfilled in you that the wonder, the miracle and the mystery can now be present as your life and as the world.

Please, beloved ones, make room for Me. Let Me come and walk with you. Let Me activate your heart that you might be truly alive with the atomic power of Love expanding your boundaries and the explosion, this explosion of Love easily changing everything -- how you see and feel and how effortlessly you allow joy, how perfectly you allow the provision of Love to fund your life, to fuel your every moment and to bring to you the most magnificent experience of the expression of this Love as your counterpart, the essence of your heart made manifest that you might see and feel and deeply know My Love for you…

…that you might give it to all who need it…this Love…this power…this joy of life that parts the waters of the illusory world of the dualistic mind and reveals the heart's reality of Love and plenty that in every Now Moment I might be your guide and also be your Real identity, the fully awake center of Love.

The heart of God I Am shall entrain it all, magnetizing every heart to this miracle and every life to the gift of transformation that just as the butterfly, you find yourself free at last after all the work of transforming…that you might realize that this is who you have been all along, the heart of God, unlimited.

Only your heart can know Me and it knows Me perfectly, but you have been living with a veil of fear around it. Step into My presence and say "Yes" that Creation, the power of life may bring the unveiling, may open up that chrysalis that has so long held you, that you might spread the wings of your spirit and rejoice in freedom.

Just remember that in these times that might seem confusing to the mind, I Am your truth, your center, your activation of Love and I Am all you need.
