Report: Russian Rocket Carrying Mexican Satellite Crashes in Siberia

A Russian-built Proton rocket with a relay satellite blasts off from a launch pad in Kazakhstan (April 2014)
The Proton-M carrier rocket blasted off with the MexSat-1 communications satellite from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan

Excerpt from nytimes.com

MOSCOW — A Russian-made rocket ferrying a Mexican telecommunications satellite crashed in eastern Siberia minutes after its launching on Saturday, Russian news agencies reported, citing officials at the country’s space agency.

The Proton-M rocket was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 11:47 a.m. and crashed in the Chita region of Siberia about eight minutes later, the reports said.

The failure appeared to have occurred with the rocket’s third stage, which was intended to bring the satellite to an altitude of about 110 miles. At that point, it was supposed to be propelled by engines into geostationary orbit.

Instead, there was a catastrophic failure. The stream of telemetry data sent back by the rocket failed about a minute before the satellite was to enter orbit, the news agencies reported.

The Interfax agency quoted an unidentified official at Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, as saying there had been an “emergency engine shutdown of the third stage.”

The Proton rocket is the mainstay transporter for International Launch Services, a joint Russian-American satellite carrier business. The satellite, called Centenario, was being sent into orbit on behalf of Mexico’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation and had been manufactured by Boeing Satellite Systems.

According to a statement issued by International Launch Services before the launching, it was intended to provide “mobile satellite services to support national security, civil and humanitarian efforts and will provide disaster relief, emergency services, telemedicine, rural education and government agency operations.”

The Proton-M is regarded as a workhorse but has encountered numerous problems in its decades of service. In 2013, a leadership shake-up at Roscosmos was prompted in part by the fourth failed launch of a Proton-M rocket within three years.

Officials said further launchings would be suspended until the cause of Saturday’s crash was determined.

The Mexican ministry said International Launch Services would create a commission to investigate the accident.

It said the satellite loss was “100 percent” covered by insurance, a point that seemed aimed at a domestic population often skeptical of the government’s spending on big projects.

The ministry said it still planned to launch another communications satellite from Cape Canaveral, Fla., aboard a Lockheed Martin rocket in October.

Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, the transportation and communications secretary, said that the lost satellite and its launching were valued at $390 million.

“I regret the mission was not a success,” Mr. Esparza said. “If Mexico is joining in these high technologies, we are going to have to learn to live with the risks that are not uncommon in this industry. The benefit is not so much being in the space era so much as the service it could provide to Mexicans.”

Randal C. Archibold contributed reporting from Mexico City.

Is it as simple as Friendship?

My dear friends...

I hope and trust that your life has been wonderful this week. Let me say that the important thing is to be friends.

Be friends with everybody.

Be friends with your spouse. Be friends with your children. Be friends with your relatives. Be friends with your neighbors and your fellow workers and your acquaintances. And yes, even be friends with your enemies.

Just...be friends.

One of the most stinging criticisms I ever received was when someone to whom I was once married, and who I truly and dearly loved, once said to me: "You treat your friends better than you treat me."

I never, ever forgot that. Because I knew it was true. It is absolutely, stunningly true that I had more tolerance for, more patience with, more leniency regarding my friends' behaviors than I did with the person with whom I was sharing my life.

I said things to my life partner that I would never say to a friend. I criticized my life partner for things that I would simply "let go" with a friend. I noticed things with my life partner that I would overlook with a friend. And I let things bother me---annoy me, actually---that my life partner did that wouldn't even phase me if a friend did the exact same thing.

What is this about? I began to wonder. Why do we so often treat those closest to us as if they were not "close" to us at all? Is it because we know them better than we know our friends, spending more time with them day in and day out as we do? Could it really be true that "familiarity breeds contempt"?

No, no...say it isn't so! Shouldn't familiarity breed compassion, understanding, patience, tolerance, acceptance, and deeper and deeper love? Shouldn't intimate relationship be the place of greatest safety, not of the least?

When I was a small child (which was very, very long ago) there was a song that was popular. Even then it was an Oldie But Goodie, and we had an old phonograph record of it sung by the Mills Brothers that I used to play on the family Victrola (Ha! Does anyone even know who or what I am talking about here---???)

The song was called, You Always Hurt the One You Love. And the lyrics went something like this...if I can remember them now...

You always hurt the one you love
The one you shouldn't hurt at all
You always take the sweetest rose
And crush it `til the petals fall

You always break the kindest heart
With a hasty word you can't recall
So if I broke your heart last night
It's because I love you most of all.

The irony of that song sticks with me to this very day. I have come to deeply regret (and to beg them and the heavens forgiveness for) the many ways that I have treated beloved others who have been close to me, and to realize that one of the greatest gifts we can give to a loved one is friendship. Pure and simple friendship. Just treat them like a Friend. Like we would treat someone we are afraid of losing.

So yes, be friends with your spouse. Be friends with your children. Be friends with your relatives. Be friends with your neighbors and your fellow workers and your acquaintances. And yes, even be friends with your enemies. And most of all...be friends with yourself!

That may be the hardest thing to do of all. And so we'll take a close look at that next week.

Love and Hugs,

Heaven #3425 In This Moment of Being

What would happen if the past tense were removed from language! And the future tense as well? What if you have only present tense to work with. Then you are conscious of the present. Then you say: "I am knowing God's Presence right now."

You might say: "I am growing closer to God with every breath. God is loving me right now. God is mine right now. I am alive right now. I am living life. I am living life the best I know how. I am getting better at life at this very moment. I am walking to God. Now I am running. Now I am with God. God and I are One. Right now We are. I am walking with God. I am moving ahead with God. God and I love each other. I am grateful to God. I am marvelous as I greet God and serve in the world on God's behalf. I am God's child. I am God's child right now. I am loving God as He is loving me. God and I are all for One, and One for all. Blessed are We."

The past is not needed, and yet the past tense of language is rampant.

Experiment today. See what happens to your focus as you use the present tense only. I have a feeling that happiness will bubble up more. Acknowledge your happiness, beloveds.

Say: "Right this moment I am happy. I am as happy as can be. When I look ahead or when I look back, my happiness feels put aside. Past happiness is only past. Future happiness is not right now. Real happiness is right now. And so I focus on what is right now. My life is bigger right now than in the past or the future. Right now I leave the past behind me, and I leave the future to itself. I am serving God right now. The past and the future do not need any service from me."

While We take out the past and future tenses, we also remove conditional tenses. No longer can it be said: "If I were a rich man.if I were nineteen again." No longer can it be said: "If I were prettier. If I were smarter. If I were loved."

Now I hear you say: "I am wealthy. I have everything, and more is arriving all the time. I am young. I am new every day. I am beautiful. I am smart. I am loved. I am loved, and I love. I am loved, and I love, and I am love. All of God's Creation is love. Therefore, all is love. I belong to this love. I am love right now. Right now, I am. I am, I am, I am. God IS. I AM. You ARE. We ARE. The One of Us IS."

And now your heart does somersaults of joy. Now the sun comes out early because you are right with the sun. You are the sun. No longer do you wait for the sun. The sun is now. You are now. All is now.

Say to yourself: "Now that I live in this moment of being, my energy is strong. My zest for life is stronger. No longer do I have regret, and no longer have I fear. Regret and fear and such things cannot and do not exist in this moment of Eternity that I call now. Now I am free of regret, and I am free of fear. Regret is retrospect. Fear is of the future. Where can fear or regret exist in this moment that I live with God? I live now. Not a while ago and not later. I am alive now. I AM right now."

The Fish Says: Love the Stream

I choose to be one with all that is, in deep peace.  I choose to move with the flow, to enjoy the feel of the water, to breathe the water and let it direct my life.  I choose to be one with the stream and to live in complete harmony with all that is in my world.

Yes, I see that there is a world outside the stream.  I see that there is a sky and that there is land.  But I do not yearn for what is not me and mine.  I do not yearn to be other than what I am.  For here, in this stream, I have power and presence.  Here in the stream that is my natural element, I can swim quickly, can dart across the stream and chase after whatever I wish whenever I wish.  I love living my life, the life that was given to me at birth.  I love being exactly what and who I am.  I love my natural environment and the way it moves with me, through me and around me.

I move with grace and ease here.  I move without conflict or resistance.  I swim, propelled by the force of nature.  I steer by using the power that flows.  I am harmony and ease and deep acceptance of the blessings that are mine.

Quado, do you have anything to add?

Ah, the fish is so wise.  Why yearn to be other than you are, when there is so much that one can be within the world that is given you?  Right now, with life exactly as it is, quiet your mind and your yearnings, still your regrets and criticisms, and look around.  Like the fish, learn a deep appreciation of the flow just as it is.

If you are feeling out of sorts, always ask yourself whether you are thinking of the present.  It is likely that you are out of sorts because of your focus on the past and the future, for the present, this moment right now, is always full of wonder and beauty.  It is always deep with peace.  And you can be connected with all of that wonder, beauty and peace, simply by dipping into it, breathing it in and being one with it, like falling into the heart of a flower, reaching up on the branches of a tree, riding on the wings of a bird overhead, and swimming with the fish in the flashing stream.

Fill your heart with love right now, with a deep love of life, and celebrate being alive in this moment, just as it is.  Do not allow this moment to pass without living it fully.  Swim; enjoy the feel of life on your skin.  Be who you are and be glad.
