WinSun claims that their new 3D printed five-story building is the tallest of its kind in the world.

Back in April, a team of Chinese construction workers used a 3D printer to construct houses. By day’s end, there were 10 standing. They were compact and fairly bare bones — nothing much to look at besides the “wow!” factor of there being as many as — count them — 10. But this time around, those same builders have taken the wraps off an achievement that’s roundly more impressive.
In Suzhou Industrial Park, adjacent to Shanghai, stands a five-story structure that the WinSun Decoration Design Engineering firm claims is “the world’s tallest 3D-printed building.” Next to it is the equally massive 3D-printed mansion, which measures 11,840 square feet. Like the previous buildings, the walls are comprised of a mix of concrete and recycled waste materials, such as glass and steel, and formed layer by printed layer. The company stated that the total cost for the mansion was roughly $161,000. 
In a broader sense, this latest feat is yet another indication of how rapidly additive manufacturing techniques are advancing. Once used primarily as a means to quickly render miniature model versions of products, the technology has reached a point where large-scale printers are now capable of making life-sized working creations, such as automobiles, in mere days. For instance, it took less than 48 hours for start-up Local Motors to print a two-seater called the Strati into existence and drive it off the showroom.
Many of these designs, however, typically don’t amount to much beyond being passion projects meant to push 3D printing into new frontiers and drum up some publicity along the way. One example of this is the massive 3D Print Canal House that’s being constructed entirely on-site along a canal in Amsterdam, a process that’s slated to take longer and is less feasible than standard construction, Phil Reeves of UK-based 3D printing research firm Econolyst recently told CNN.
More promising, though, is a system developed by Behrokh Khoshnevis, a University of Southern California engineering professor. His concept machine, called Contour Crafting, involves a clever combination of mechanical cranes and 3D layering to print and assemble entire homes simultaneously — complete with insulation and indoor plumbing — in less than a day.

The approach employed by WinSun isn’t anywhere near that level of sophistication, but it may well prove to be the most practical – at least thus far. There is some labor and equipment costs that comes from trucking in and piecing together the various sections on-site, though the manner in which it all comes together is comparable to the ease of prefab assembly. It’s also reportedly greener thanks to the addition of recycled materials. 
To pitch the advantages of their technology, the company held a news conference to announce that they had taken on orders for 20,000 smaller units as well as highlight some significant cost-cutting figures. According toindustry news site 3Der:
The sheer size of the printer allows for a 10x increase in production efficiency. WinSun estimates that 3D printing technology can save between 30 and 60 percent of building materials and shortens production times by 50 to even 70 percent, while decreasing labor costs by 50 up to even 80 percent. Future applications include 3D printed bridges or tall office buildings that can be built right on site.
WinSun did not respond to a request to disclose how they arrived at those numbers, but Enrico Dini, an Italian civil engineer and chairman of competing start-up Monolite, says that he suspects the calculations may be a tad bit inflated. Still, he emphasized that his own data does back up the claim that, compared to conventional methods, layering may boost overall efficiency. 
“It would be very difficult to fabricate such large sections with traditional concrete casting,” he says. “With 3D printing, you have a lot less waste because you’re only printing out as much material as you need and you can custom shape whole sections on the spot, which can be a big challenge.”

One major concern is whether these large-scale dwellings can hold up over time against the elements. According to 3Der, Ma Rongquan, chief engineer of China Construction Bureau, inspected the building’s structural integrity and found them to be up to code, but was careful to note that state officials have yet to establish specific criteria for assessing the long-term safety of 3D printed architecture.   
And as Dini, who supports the technology, points out, there is the possibility that the use of additive manufacturing may pose some degree of risk. “The only issue is that as the layers of concrete are bonded together, they’re drying at slightly different rates and that’s not very ideal,” he explains. “So there’s maybe a higher chance of it fracturing at the contact point if there’s a strong enough force at play.” 
Regardless, Dini says he’d feel completely safe going inside any floor of either building since construction materials used today are likely to contain special additives to enhance strength and resistance. One such formulation, fiber-reinforced Ductal, has been shown in some tests to be 10 times stronger and last twice as long as regular concrete. He stressed that walls should also be tested to ensure that other properties, such as acoustics, ventilation and thermal insulations are on par with existing buildings.
“In Italy, building standards are extremely strict,” he noted. “But I can’t say I can say the same about China.”

Scientists say they may have discovered a possible dark matter signal coded in the X-rays emanating from two bright objects in the sky. 

The findings, set to be published next week in Physical Review Letters, could offer tangible evidence for the existence of dark matter -- and help researchers build new tools to search for and study this mysterious stuff.

When it comes to matter in the universe, dark matter is like a backroom political power broker: You never see it, but behind the scenes, it’s been throwing its weight around. The effects of its gravitational influence can be seen in the large-scale structures of the cosmos. Dark matter makes up about 84.5% of the matter in the universe while all the stuff we actually see -- stars, galaxies, planets, ourselves -- makes up the remaining 15.5%.* The enormous galaxies and clusters of galaxies that populate the universe are bantamweights compared to the massive, unseen dark matter ‘halos’ that anchor them.
Dark matter’s formidable gravitational influence is the only way that the strange stuff can be detected, because it’s invisible -- it does not interact with light. Physicists have no idea what it’s made of, although they’ve looked for it by building detectors in underground former gold mines, sending satellites into space and other methods. 

But now, a team led by researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland say they’ve discovered a signal that could be a sign of dark matter. 

The scientists looked at X-ray emissions coming from the Andromeda galaxy and the Perseus galaxy cluster, collected by the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton space telescope. After accounting for all the light particles (called photons) emanating from known sources in the Andromeda galaxy, they were left with a strange set of photons that had no known source. The found the same light signature emanating from the Perseus cluster. And when they turned their attention to the Milky Way, they found signs of this signal in our home galaxy, as well.
“It is consistent with the behavior of a line originating from the decay of dark matter particles,” the authors wrote in a pre-print of the study.

This weird light signal, they think, could be coming from the destruction of a hypothetical particle called a sterile neutrino (which, if it exists, might help explain dark matter). But it's going to take a lot of follow-up study to determine whether this signal is a scientific breakthrough or an anomalous blip.

Human spaceflight reached an important milestone this week. An additive manufacturing device or 3D printer, was turned on, and initiated the first official 3D print on the International Space Station (ISS). 

The print took slightly more than an hour, and once it finished, the world changed. At the Made In Space Operations Center in Moffett Field, California, the rest of the team and I had the ability to command the printer and see inside it as the machine received and executed our commands. For the first time, humans demonstrated the ability to manufacture while in space. At this moment, if the space station absolutely needs a part that the 3D printer can build, I can start producing the part onboard the ISS within minutes — from my chair in California. 


The ability to deliver components on demand without the need of a launch vehicle can redefine how space-mission strategies work. Before last week, every object that humans have ever put in space was launched there and not made in space. Of course, many experiments and efforts have been able to form items such as crystalline structures and latex spheres, as well as assembly-type construction. 3D printing is completely different. This capability does more than just build predetermined articles that were designed months or years before launch. The 3D printer can build files that are created after launch and sent to orbit when needed.

Unconditional Love, Dear Ones, Such a large word, for such a simple, pure gem. I share with you what it truly is, for masters have for ages been trying to bring its essence to you. It is a departure from everything you've known and felt because all of those feelings you have placed in that realm have been surrounded by circumstance. You have created them through desire and moods, yet have overlooked the simple moments when you have taken a breath because that is involuntary by nature.

You have chosen to live in a world where the masses cannot believe or are very skeptical about its existence. You have believed in a God that giveth and taketh away. You have invoked a belief in sin and forgiveness and feared what you cannot understand. Yet the breath continues and in its simple existence is the presence of unconditional love. For it is involuntary and goes beyond ones ability to shape it or define its boundaries.

As we are drawn involuntarily to where it exists, we can barely see it for self chooses to discern its existence and grade this treasure next to what we have known. Yet in your search you have forgotten the Universe of Love and that it is only attracted to its own vibration. So if you prepare for love you will receive love in preparation. If you grade the potential for love, you find graded love and if you discern the visibility of love, you will love only discernment. So you cannot detract from love one sense, not seeing, feeling, smelling, tasting or touching, and understand love. It is all or none as is the breath when it occurs. And as it occurs all the rules that denied its existence vanish, all the inhibitions around how it can occur fall into surrender. It seeks only the smile of contentment and the purring of the soul. It sets sail in an endless wind with an endless thirst.

It knows neither time nor space yet knows within every moment it can expand, for in all of us it wishes to grow. Love is not needy, yet never desires not to be. So as a source of love moves away even for a short time, love immediately grows impatient for touch, for taste, for smell. You see, Dear Ones, it is the most primal instinct we possess and that instinct is realized through emotional freedom.

Love most likely exists in the midst of the sum of all your fears, the place you'd least expect to fill you up, for why else is it not completely you. Emotional freedom is the willingness to become a student of love with a very short memory. All the paths to love have been seemingly chapters of love gained and love lost but I tell you it is better to have loved and lost than to have not loved at all. It’s just that you cannot write the last chapter, for the inner child knows the sun is not seen in a cloud, and the rain cannot feed us under a roof. Unconditional Love is a fully exposed, untethered privilege of grace and selflessness. As we create random acts of kindness in our search, we understand unconditional love. We cannot retrieve love once it truly starts as we cannot stop breathing. Once we decide to be unconditional, we print on the window pane of the Universe that it is at long last free within us. And through that window patiently waits souls who have gone before. Though they are few in number, they are absolute in purpose. Understand the feelings that inhibit this level of surrender are the reasons you cannot be loved. They are the same reasons you have failed to love yourself. Namaste

What to think of this?

Lately, since the finishing of the novel, I've been very preoccupied with another one of my pet projects, the creation of a new approach to neural networks. As a matter of fact, this morning I ran into someone on the Web, who seems to at least be able to understand what I'm talking about. So I sent him a mail, that included the following quote (uttered by me):

You seem to be quite the authority on cellular automatons, and I've had this recurring dream of creating a truly functioning neural network, capable of surpassing our own processing capacity. Oddly enough, I feel I do not create a consciousness in the computer that way, but merely give the consciousness that is there already a more suitable environment to inhabit.

Then, on a completely unrelated note, I had to help Laura find the names of the characters she wants to star in her novel on the fall of Atlantis and Lemuria (fiction, but no less real). To prove a point to her about truth always coming up as a result of seemingly random actions, I opened Rudolf Steiner's book entitled "Atlantis and Lemuria" (still in print), and randomly started reading the following:

Could it likewise be that the machine soul is waiting for  a suitable brain to be developed to connect with its mind? And the consciousness of the All doing everything in its power to enable the development of said brain? Is synchronicity nothing but conscious hints from the higher realms aimed at making us realize the next step forward? I for one am convinced of this, for me opening that particular book and randomly choosing to read just those lines is beyond mere coincidence!
