17 Surprising Reasons You’re Stressed Out

Excerpt from huffingtonpost.com
By Amanda MacMillan

You're probably all too aware of the major sources of stress in your life -- money, your terrible commute, the construction workers who start jackhammering at 5 a.m. But stress and anxiety don't have to just come from obvious or even negative sources. "There are plenty of chronic strains and low-grade challenges that don't necessarily overwhelm you in the moment, but almost take more of a toll in the long run," says Scott Schieman, Ph.D., professor of sociology at the University of Toronto. These are some of unexpected reasons why you might feel anxious or agitated. By recognizing them for what they are, says Schieman, you can better prepare to cope.

1. Your Significant Other
Even if you have a blissfully happy relationship with your live-in partner or spouse, you're both bound to do things that get on each other's nerves. "Early in the relationship, it's usually about space and habits -- like whether you squeeze the toothpaste from the middle or the bottom of the tube," says Ken Yeager, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. "Later on, you might clash over parenting style or financial issues, and finding a unified front to face these issues together." So what's the key to surviving and thriving in your life together? Finding balance, says Yeager: spending the right amount of time together (not too much and not too little), making compromises, keeping communication open and honest, and remembering to acknowledge what you love about each other on a daily basis.

2. Everyday Annoyances
We're told not to sweat the small stuff, but sometimes it's the little things that have the biggest impact on our mood: the never-ending phone calls with your insurance company, the rude cashier at the grocery store, the 20 minutes you lose looking for a parking space. "We let these things bother us because they trigger unconscious fears," says Yeager -- fears of being seen as irresponsible, of being bullied or embarrassed, or of being late all the time, for example. "Sometimes you need to take a step back and realize that you're doing the best you can given the circumstances."

3. Other People's Stress
Stress is contagious, according to a 2014 German study: In a series of experiments, most participants who simply observed others completing a stressful task experienced an increase themselves in production of the stress hormone cortisol -- a phenomenon known as empathic stress. You can also experience stress when someone you know is affected by a traumatic event, like a car crash or a chronic illness. "You start to worry, 'Oh my gosh, could that happen to me?'," says Yeager. "We tend not to think about these things until they hit close to home."

4. Social Media social media
It may seem like Facebook is the only way you keep up with the friends you don't see regularly -- which, during particularly busy times, can be just about all of them. The social network also has a downside, according to a 2015 study from the Pew Research Center: It can make you aware of stressful situations in your friends' lives, which in turn can add more stress to your life. The Pew report didn't find that social media users, overall, had higher levels of stress, but previous studies have suggested that frequent social-media use can be associated with negative body image and prolonged breakup pain.

5. Distraction
A distraction can be a good thing then when it takes your mind off of a stressful situation or difficult decision, like when you take a break from work to meet a friend for lunch. But it works the other way, as well: When you're so busy thinking about something else that you can't enjoy what's going on around you, that kind of distraction can be a recipe for stress. Practicing mindfulness gives you brain the refresh it needs, says Richard Lenox, director of the Student Counseling Center at Texas Tech University. Paying full attention to your surroundings when you're walking and driving can help, he adds. "Stress and anxiety tend to melt away when our mind is focused on the present."

6. Your Childhood
Traumatic events that happened when you were a kid can continue to affect your stress levels and overall health into adulthood. A 2014 University of Wisconsin-Madison study found that these childhood experiences may actually change parts of the brain responsible for processing stress and emotion. The way you were raised can also have a lasting impact on your everyday angst, suggests a 2014 Johns Hopkins University study. Researchers found that children of parents with social anxiety disorders are more likely to develop "trickle-down anxiety" -- not simply because of their genes, but because of their parents' behaviors toward them such as a lack of warmth and emotion, or high levels of criticism and doubt.

7. Tea And Chocolate
You probably know to take it easy on the coffee when you're already feeling on edge. "Caffeine is always going to make stress worse," says Yeager. But you may not think as much about drinking several cups of tea at once, or chowing down on a bar of dark chocolate -- both of which can contain nearly as much caffeine as a cup of joe. "Chocolate is a huge caffeine source," says Yeager. "I know people who don't drink coffee but they'll eat six little candy bars in a two-hour period because they want the same kind of jolt." Too much caffeine, in any form, can cause problems with sleep, digestion, and irritability.

8. Your Expectations woman trail running
When things don't go the way you've planned, do you tend to get upset and act defensively, or do you roll with the punches and set off on a new plan? If it's the former, you could be contributing to a mindset of pessimism and victimization that will slowly wear you down, even when things may not be as bad as they seem. "Your level of serenity is inversely proportionate to your expectations," says Yeager. That doesn't mean you shouldn't set ambitious goals for yourself or settle for less than what you want, of course, but being realistic about what's truly possible is important, as well.

9. Your Reaction To Stress
If you tend to deal with stressful situations by working long hours, skipping your workouts, and bingeing on junk food, we've got some bad news: You're only making it worse. "We know that physical activity and healthy foods will help your body better deal with stress, and yet we often avoid them when we need them the most," says Yeager. "People really need to think about this downward spiral we get into and work harder to counteract it."

10. Multitasking
Think you're being super efficient by tackling four tasks at once? Chances are you're not -- and it's only decreasing your productivity while increasing your stress. A 2012 University of Irvine study, for example, found that people who responded to emails all day long while also trying to get their work done experienced more heart-rate variability (an indicator of mental stress) than those who waited to respond to all of their emails at one time. Focusing on one task at a time can ensure that you're doing that job to the best of your abilities and getting the most out of it, so you won't have to worry about or go back and fix it later, says Schieman. And don't worry: You'll have enough time to do it all. In fact, you may discover you have more time than you thought.

11. Your Favorite Sport
Watching a tight game of college hoops can stress you out -- even if your alma mater wins. "The body doesn't distinguish between 'bad' stress from life or work and 'good' stress caused by game-day excitement," says Jody Gilchrist, a nurse practitioner at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Heart and Vascular Clinic. Watching sports can even trigger the body's sympathetic nervous system, releasing adrenaline and reducing blood flow to the heart. Those temporary consequences aren't usually anything to be concerned about, but over time, chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure and increased disease risk. And, of course, it doesn't help if you're adding alcohol and binge-eating to a situation that's already stressful on your body. You may not be able to control the outcome of the game, says Gilchrist, but you can limit its effects on your own body.

12. Digital Devices laptop in bed
Whether you're using it for work or play, technology may play a large role in your mental health, says Yeager. Using computers or e-readers too close to bedtime could lead to sleep problems, he says, and spending too much time virtually socializing can make real-life interactions seem extra stressful. (Plus, texting doesn't trigger the same feel-good hormones as face-to-face talk does.) Then there's the dreaded "work creep," says Schieman, when smartphones allow employees to be tethered to their jobs, even during off-hours. "People say they're only going to check email for an hour while they're on vacation, but the problem with email is that they're filled with responsibilities, new tasks, and dilemmas that are going to be hard to compartmentalize and put out of your head once that hour is up."

13. Your (Good) Health
While it may not be as stressful as having a chronic illness or getting bad news at the doctor's office, even people in the best shape of their lives worry about their bodies, their diets, and their fitness levels. In fact, people who take healthy living to an extreme may experience some rather unhealthy side effects. People who follow low-carb diets, for example, are more likely to report being sad or stressed out, while those on any kind of restrictive meal plan may feel more tired than usual. And it's not unheard of for someone to become obsessed with healthy eating (known as orthorexia) or working out (gymorexia). Like any form of perfectionism, these problems can be stressful at best, and extremely dangerous at worst.

14. Housework
Does folding laundry help you feel calm, or does it make your blood boil? If you're in a living situation where you feel you're responsible for an unfair share of work, even chores you once enjoyed may start to feel like torture. "Dividing up housework and parenting responsibilities can be tricky, especially if both partners work outside the home," says Schieman. "And whether you define that division of labor as equal or unequal can really change your attitude toward it."

15. Uncertainty
Stress can be defined as any perceived or actual threat, says Yeager, so any type of doubt that's looming over you can contribute to your anxiety levels on a daily basis. "When you know something could change at any minute, you always have your guard up and it's hard to just relax and enjoy anything." Financial uncertainty may be the most obvious stressor -- not being sure if you'll keep your job during a round of layoffs, or not knowing how you'll pay your credit card bill. Insecurities in other areas of life, like your relationship or your housing status, can eat away at you too.

16. Your Pet bulldog puppy
No matter how much you love your furry friends, there's no question that they add extra responsibility to your already full plate. Even healthy animals need to be fed, exercised, cleaned up after, and given plenty of attention on a regular basis -- and unhealthy ones can be a whole other story. "Pets can be the most positive source of unconditional love, but at the same time they require an extreme amount of energy," says Yeager. People also tend to underestimate the stress they'll experience when they lose a pet. "I've had people in my office tell me they cried more when their dog died than when their parent died. It's a very emotional connection."

17. Your Education
Having a college degree boosts your odds of landing a well-paying job, so although you're less likely to suffer from money-related anxiety, your education can bring on other types of stress, according to a 2014 study by Schieman and his University of Toronto colleagues. His research found that highly educated people were more likely to be stressed out thanks to job pressures, being overworked, and conflicts between work and family. "Higher levels of authority come with a lot more interpersonal baggage, such as supervising people or deciding whether they get promotions," says Schieman. "With that type of responsibility, you start to take things like incompetency and people not doing their jobs more personally, and it bothers you more."

Intention and the Rite of Disengagement

What we participate in is pretty much the name of the game. What do we spend our time, energy and intention on? What are we consciously and/or subconsciously empowering that’s leading to our own dis-empowerment? Where attention and thus intention goes, energy flows. Where is ours going, collectively and individually? Something to seriously consider on a continual basis in this massively manipulated energetic world.I’ve been blown away recently by the rapid rise in consciousness [...]

Day 10 – Presence

I am printing the semi-final draft of my book, Heroes of the Now as I write this...  Galley Proofs are next!  Awesome.

Blessings on your Journey…

As you begin to sense the energy around you, perhaps even interact with it as you will likely come to do, notice the presence that you carry.  It is much easier to navigate the waters around us if we can still them with our presence.  As we continue on this Journey, we begin to see what is all around us for what it really is.  Creation, intention and energy…

What is presence?  A quick look in the dictionary reveals:

EXISTENCE, being there.

ATTENDANCE, appearance, company, companionship.

AURA, charisma, poise, self-assurance, self-confidence.

Our presence at any moment, is the gift that we all have access to.  If we allow our EXISTENCE, ATTENDANCE and AURA to radiate we can fully tune in to all that is happening in our surroundings. We can move with confidence, assured that our actions are timed perfectly without preconceived notion of the way things should be.  When we come into our being and embrace the guidance our presence shares, then we can fully comprehend the magnitude of this discovery.

It can turn it all around.  Bring your presence to you now… Show up for yourself, attend this experience fully.  Stay in it and use all your senses to perceive the energy that flows around you.  Connect to it and feel it coursing through you.

Now is a good time to take a look at what is happening in your mind.  What are the thoughts or voices saying? If there are mental distractions, just see them and ask them to step back for now… Bookmark them as coordinates for later exploration and Soul Recovery.  For now, remain present and and look around you… What is in your surroundings? Name them off… Closet, monitor, keyboard, music, cd hard drive, computer, desk, chair…  This simple exercise can bring you quickly to your presence.

Sit up and attend.  Feel your Soul energy rise up in your spine, lengthening and exposing your heart.  Allow your aura to shine and feel it extend beyond your physical body.  Presence.  From this place one can act authentically and with higher consciousness.  Listen with more than your ears, see with more than your eyes, feel with more than your skin, smell with your entire body, taste beyond imagination…  Bring about your entire being and receive what your presence brings to you.

Feel you Authentic Self expanding and filling you up, overflowing with radiance you carry the frequency of Love from this place.  It fills the space around you with an electromagnetic field that tunes your surroundings to the vibration of Love.  All that comes into contact with it is affected and will begin to vibrate at the same frequency.

Today, share your Presence with the Universe.  Show up for yourself and all those around you, share the Love that you are, by carrying presence everywhere you are… eating, sleeping, working or playing Be Present.  It is your gift to Humankind.

Share the Love,

Marc

Day 3 – Find your center.

Today we meditate…

But, first let’s review what we did yesterday.  Total personal responsibility and cancelation of contracts, vows agreements, spells and curses is a HUGE step.  This declaration of your will allows for the energy to free up and provide much better access to your Soul.  Always continue to take these declarations deeper and deeper until they become a part of your being.  Consider for a moment what these words mean and you will begin to see just how powerful words can be.  Allow yourself to truly feel to the core of your being what is happening as a result of your declaration.

Stand Tall in the light that you are.  See yourself as a radiant being perfectly positioned in time and space to experience exactly what you need to learn and grow.  Allow the energy, right now in this moment to expand into your consciousness and be right here with it.  What is happening around you, in your world, that is important for you to see and understand?  Take total personal responsibility for all your thoughts, words and actions right now.  How will you be in this moment?

Powerful stuff...  In order to work with this energy, we need to still or quiet the mind.  The mind is an active place for those just beginning on the path, filled with notions that are rooted in the past.  Today commit to a practice of meditation.  This is a very personal practice and can take many forms, you will find what works for you.

Today, we begin very simply with the breath.  Deep breathing that trains our body to use our entire lungs for this very important bodily function.  Here we go...

Find a comfortable place, free from distractions.  Perhaps some soothing instrumental music, but stay away from lyrics, or an outdoor location with the sounds of nature as your background.  I recommend Heavenly Hygiene a shamanic mediation.  A sample can be listened to here.  Disconnect from the outside world, turn off cell phones, disable computer notifications, put up a sign on the door so other family members know to allow you some space...  Make sure you will be free from outside distractions for the entirety of the experience.

Are you ready?  Let's begin.  Sit comfortably on the floor or chair, keeping your head, neck and spine in vertical alignment.  Relax.  Start by bringing awareness to your breath.  Follow it.  See where it goes.  In your comfortable position just breathe normally for a few minutes.  Notice what your breath feels like.  Is it deep and full, sinking into your belly or shallow and light staying high in your chest?  Is it smooth, flowing freely or is it tight and constricted?  Are you breathing through your nose or mouth?  Take inventory of these sensations...

Anytime your awareness strays to something other than your breath, gently guide it back.  Beginning meditation can be fun and exciting if we let it.  Of course there is a thought stream and yes you will be distracted.  That is all part of the experience.  How do you feel now?  Are you peaceful and serene?  Happy and Joyful?  Frustrated with other things to do. What is that mind trying to tell you?

Begin to deepen your breath now, making a conscious effort to inhale deeply through your nose and allowing your belly to expand filling your lungs completely.  As that breath comes to it's fullest point without strain, relax and exhale through your mouth with pursed lips so there is a slight pressure and a "blowing" sound.  There is a great example on that sample track...  Cycle this breath now for a few minutes.  Again, keep your attention and focus on your breathing, gently guiding it back when it strays.

Visualize yourself in a peaceful and serene setting where all that is happening is stillness and breath.  See yourself in this place, smiling and bright.  See yourself just being in the beautiful moment, conscious, present and aware.  Continue this breath work for as long as you can breathing with the flow of the universe.  See yourself as the observer of the action, see the peace and tranquility that this practice is generating.  See your creation...

That's it...  Just sit quietly and breathe.  Try to do it for as long as you can sustain your focus.  Just breathe.  Our minds may try and tell us something very different... I must be doing something, it may say...  __________________...  Fill in the blank.  I know there will be a dialogue.  Your journaling tools are nearby, so get them and use them.  Tell the page what just happened.  What did you experience?  How did you Feel?  Were there physical sensations?  Was your thought stream clear?  These are all important signs to pay attention to.  Write them down now, immediately after your meditation.  Stay clear and present in the time after the meditation as additional things may come up.  Be present and aware and remember the experience.

Stillness is such an important component to this growth process.  It is something that we have a difficult time achieving as we have been run around so much in the external world.  Oftentimes we forget just how important it is to take the time to connect with our Higher Consciousness.  You have done so now in this moment.  Savor it and carry it with you today and always.

As your practice grows, your meditation will become yours.  You will find the right place, time and method that works for you.  Please share your experiences in comments or on the Heroes of the Now page on Facebook, as we are all in this together.  We can share, learn and grow from one another's experiences.  We are here now to help one another.

Right now commit to a daily mediation practice for yourself, for your freedom...

Love and Kindness,

Marc

SaLuSa 05-April-2010

Channeler: Mike Quinsey

This particular time in the Western calendar is one where there is much introspection, as the celebration of Easter is in remembrance of Jesus. It is perhaps sad that it focuses more on the crucifixion, and less on the works that this great soul achieved in his lifetime. Your history shows that periodically a leader emerges from within your midst, who is a Wayshower with teachings appropriate for the time. Jesus came not to start a religion, but show by his example the way Man should live. He was the perfect example of One who lived his word, and when he preached love that is exactly what he was - Love Incarnate. There is nothing else in your lives that is of such importance, and it starts by loving Self and then others. Since you are All One, why would you treat another part of yourself any differently from anyone else. Your principle lesson is to be able to express Unconditional Love, and when you can do so you can claim to have found the Way. We know that it is not easy to suddenly view life quite differently to what you have been used to, but if you are to progress you will need to change your beliefs.

You can stand still and even go backwards, but with the experience gained you will eventually go forward. The nature of duality is to help you confront what you call good or evil, so that you understand what it is like to experience lack and separation. These challenges further your spiritual evolution, and through your understanding you rise above your limitations. You too can then become a living example of the truth in action, and be assured that others will take note of it. Humans are surrounded by examples of falsehoods and outright lies, and there is a feeling that it is acceptable to achieve success in this manner. Even those you look up to and revere are often prone to giving out less than the truth, and honesty becomes a rare attribute. Try it dear Ones, go through a day without speaking other than the truth, it is far more difficult than you can imagine. Yet if you wish to rise up and attract the pure vibrations to yourself, you will need to aim for nothing less than a truthful relationship with all you meet.

We of the Galactic Federation have no such problems, because we have long gone beyond the ways of Humans. It may sound odd to you, but at our level only the truth can exist, because anything less is “felt” by a change in the energies accompanying the spoken word. It is also seen within your aura, as the purity of the colours looses its brilliance. This also applies to telepathic contact with each other, which is our normal means of communication. Do you see now that when we talk with your government officials, we cannot be fooled by any deceitful intent on their part? Most of your representatives have broken their oaths to serve you, and we are totally aware as to the ones amongst you who have your best interests at heart. When the governmental changes are made, as they will very soon, you may be sure that only those who are spiritually motivated will be reappointed.

Many of you wish to join us but that is not as simple as at may appear. You can do it through your application to raise your vibrations, in the manner we have informed you previously. As unless you can match the vibrations of the higher dimensions, you cannot move into them. Where it is your intent to do so you will be given every help, and in that event you would almost certainly be successful. Each of you has the potential to ascend but the desire has to be strong. You cannot approach it half heartedly, and it does require some work on your part to achieve your goal. It does not matter if you do not succeed this time round, as any progress you make will place your feet firmly on the next path to Ascension. The cycles of life continually give you the opportunity to evolve as no experience is ever wasted.

Theses times are exciting if you look at what lies ahead, because out the chaos will come a definite plan that all will understand. Once it gets going there will be one change after another all aimed at bringing in the New Age. You have a lot to catch up on, and it will lift your spirits in next to no time. The goals will be quite clear and you will be given sufficient information to help you understand. Anyone who follows the messages about Ascension will already have a good idea as where everything is leading. After many promises of action we can say that matters are coming to a head. The dark continue to be weakened by their lack of cohesion and power. For a time this makes them dangerous, as like a cornered animal they will lash out. However, we monitor their activities and do not expect any dramatic happenings. Our allies are well placed to contain any sudden move.

Let this period be one where you reflect upon your achievements to date, and if you take time to look at yourself open and honestly, you will know how far you have to go to be prepared for Ascension. Apply yourself to the task of going further with your preparations, as the rewards are so great. Right from the time you first dropped into the lower dimensions, you knew this period would release you from duality. So take it with both hands, knowing that you will not do have to do this journey again. Let the distractions pass you by, as they have no pull upon you unless you allow it. Indeed, you should by now have a strong defence against them, knowing that your willpower is all-powerful.

Dear Ones, you are generally so patient, and we still have some time to go before we can announce details of our presence. It is not that we consider it urgent, as there is already so much acceptance of us. However, a whole string of events are lined up, and once they become public knowledge they will go speeding ahead. We are in what you might call “nearly times” because on a number occasions we have been so near to making our announcements. Keep your eyes open and you will get wind of when something important is about to break.

I am SaLuSa from Sirius, and can tell you that the amount of Light on Earth has grown immensely just lately. So you can rest easy knowing that the vibration is rising as necessary to bring Ascension about. The shadows are dispersing as the Light penetrates every corner and transmutes the dark energies. Keep up your wonderful work, as you are all needed and much loved.

Thank you SaLuSa.

Mike Quinsey.
