The only way round is through. Robert Frost

No steam or gas ever drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined. Harry Emerson Fosdick

Due to the current economic climate, the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice. Anon

If we see light at the end of the tunnel it is the light of an oncoming train. Robert Lowell

If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

RAILROAD, n. The chief of many mechanical devices enabling us to get away from where we are to where we are no better off. Ambrose Bierce

February's new Moon falls on February 2 in the United States and February 3 in Australia. The Sabian Symbol is Aquarius 14: A Train Entering A Tunnel.

You may feel the need to cut through any obstacles you encounter and to go straight ahead, regardless of any unseen hazards on your way. It may be necessary to examine whether you are operating at cross-purposes with someone. There may be a need to check the 'Trains' signals, to make sure that there’s not a collision with people, or complications, coming the other way. This can be particularly true if this feels like a “one-track” journey. Perhaps the situation feels like it’s never going to end, as though you’re stuck in a ‘Tunnel’, but it’s certain that it will. You are likely to have a great deal of drive and it’s probable that others are with you, or people may be depending on you, so plough on through.

However, this can be a lonely journey that you’re on. It may feel like you’re going through a dark ‘Tunnel’ all by yourself, and there can be a sense of isolation. Whatever the situation, there’s a need to cut to the heart of the problem, without stopping to consider every single detail. Quickly adjusting, changing or making up your mind about some issue or problem can lead to swift conclusions and solutions. Getting stuck in the details of the situation will probably just add to a much longer outcome than is needed. You, or someone close to you, may need to just go for it. Look to ensure that you’re not missing out on the joy in the journey though. Perhaps you’d really rather go the long way than through the ‘Tunnel’?

Keywords: Deep penetration. Cutting through extraneous or stifling detail. Cutting through the crap. Persistence. Shortcuts to a desired end. Heart bypasses—physical, emotional, spiritual, etc. Cutting to the chase. Going for the objective regardless of side issues. Working at getting something finished or done. Near-death experiences. The need for track maintenance. Dropping all distracting considerations. Fallopian tubes. Hurried sex.

The Caution: Being overcautious. Taking the long way around. Shortcuts that inhibit deep penetration. Tunnel vision. Cutting people off. Not listening to others. Having a one-track mind that doesn’t allow for detours or deviations. Severe changes in pressure. Railroading and bulldozing.

Mars is conjunct (together with) the new Moon and very shortly after the new Moon, the Moon and the Sun move quickly onto the same degree as Mars: Aquarius 15: Two Lovebirds Sitting On A Fence And Singing Happily (hence, this degree is very strongly highlighted). From my book:

'Singing' and making statements about love can bring happiness to those nearby and lift the spirits of all involved. However, this Symbol can also point to dividing lines between people, like having a ‘Fence’ of some kind between them. Although there may be superficial feelings of contentment and pleasure, this can be based on someone having a non-committed, tenuous or shaky position. To go one way or another with conviction in a relationship can invite the risk of separation, but commitment eventually needs to be chosen or rejected. How long can people sit on the ‘Fence’? The ‘Fence’ can represent actual physical divisions between people, where they can see each other, but can’t actually connect or be with each other. Is that what’s happening? Is one ‘Lovebird Singing Happily' and the other one wanting to escape? Divisions of hearts and minds can lead to sorrow. See if you can look to love and happiness. It may take time for people to relax into a relationship, especially if they’ve learnt to distrust each other or relationships in general. Is there a pledging of commitment to each other? This Symbol can also indicate problems with fertility and falling pregnant. If people are always ‘On the Fence’ how can they commit to the lives of their offspring—whether the “offspring” is their young, their creative ideas, their relationships or their future.

Keywords: Faith in love. Waiting for signs. Friendship and companionship. Issues of “that’s them and this is us”. Fences, borders and barriers. Showing love for all to see. Commitment to relationship. Mating for life. The need for honest communications. Singing. Speaking one's truth.

The Caution: Sitting on the fence. Complaining about relationships. Waiting to see what the others do. Being stuck when one would rather fly off and be free. Having a fixed position. Not wanting to comply with the other. Neighborhood disputes. Noises from next door. Boasting of happiness.

The theme of relationships is also reflected by Saturn which is currently stationing retrograde (which means it stays on the one degree for a long time before heading on it's seemingly backwards journey). The Sabian Symbol is Libra 18: Two Men Placed Under Arrest Give An Accounting For Their Acts Before The Tribunal Of Society

People’s ideas or actions may be under criticism or examination, to the point of feeling that someone has offended social responsibility and acceptability. They may have to justify or explain themselves, and relationships can be held in limbo until all the facts come to light. There may be a need to be thoughtful about the situation, because there may be nothing but suspicion at this point. The “case” could well be dismissed, with people forgiven or let off the hook, but with suspicion in the air, what permanent damage has already been done? Often a sense of trust and belief in the goodness of people is necessary. An attitude of forgiveness may be really important to move through this situation with one’s sense of pride intact. Being charged with an offense can drive people apart, with each trying to save their own neck. How long can someone be “handcuffed”, either to themselves or to another? Imagining the removal of “the cuffs” could lead to a turn around in the situation. People in positions of power, physical or emotional, should show mercy so others can also forgive and forget and get on with their lives. Ultimately, the goal must lead to freedom.

Keywords: Having to plead one’s case. The need for “legal help”. Unacceptable principles. Blowing the whistle. Pointing at others to get off charges. People unable to relate. The “Romeo and Juliet” story. Feeling caught out. Restrictions. Karma to be worked out. Being framed. Circumstances out of control. People in handcuffs. Identification parades. Police. The law. Lawyers. Judges. Juries. Tribunals. Police states. Breaking laws.

The Caution: Refusing to conform. Sabotage of relationship values. Feeling stuck, unable to move. Staying in relationships when one should go. Deadening emotions. Shutting off to cope. Not having one’s point of view heard. Losing one’s authority. Being bound karmically. Being tied up and limited.

The degrees above seem to be implying the idea of "you're either with me or against me"… of course, relationships could take a leap forward and be freed of difficulties, but it seems the overlying theme is one of having to work things out, let things go, accept what is while focusing very much on where you're going.

The message from Venus seems to imply the need for doing what needs to be done. No matter how boring, repetitive or restrictive, some things just need to be done. The Sabian Symbol for Venus is Sagittarius 29: A Fat Boy Mowing The Lawn. What jobs need doing? Who's doing them or not doing them? Who contributes? Who expects everyone else to clean up after them? Are you weighed down by how much you have to do?

Uranus, the planetary ruler of this new Moon, is exactly squaring Venus, bringing relationship issues to the fore again. The Sabian Symbol for Uranus is Pisces 29: Light Breaking Into Many Colors As It Passes Through A Prism. This degree can show considering many facets of a situation, disseminating information, auras and aura photography, spectrum analysis, optics, sight, seeing, polarization of light, reflection, laboratory tests. This degree can show situations where there's way too much analysis going on but with Uranus squaring Venus, there can be split-second decisions that cut one off from others, or, decisions made that change the course of your life. Uranus can be like a big pair of karmically sharpened scissors, cutting through extraneous stuff to get to the core of what's going on. It can be cruel in it's ability to sever connections but can also clear away things that are no longer needed.

Perhaps Mercury can come up with a few clues as to best handle what's going on in your life. What are the signs you should, perhaps, be seeing? The Sabian Symbol for Mercury is Capricorn 29: A Woman Reading Tea Leaves. This Symbol speaks of seeing signatures in small things that others may miss, intuition and clairvoyance, creative visualization, tea leaves and coffee grounds, non verbal clues, predicting the future, seeking guidance and changes in fortune. It can be: constantly seeking assurance, taking things literally, not symbolically, looking for answers or significance everywhere, small rewards for talents that should be more respected.

Jupiter can also bring messages about determining how you fit into the scheme of life. It's on Aries 3: A Cameo Shows The Profile Of A Man That Suggests The Outline Of His Country. This speaks of figuring out your 'profile', what you're meant to be doing, where you're meant to be, who you want to associate with. It can speak about allegiances with creed, religion, race or country, nationhood and brotherhood. What is the 'outline of your "country"?'

The imperative to find one's place is made stronger by a square to the karmic Moon's north node, which is asking that we express ourselves, be creative, drop into ourselves yet again. It's on Capricorn 3: The Human Soul, In Its Eagerness For New Experiences, Seeks Embodiment. This speaks of inner motivation leading to expansion, being born again, feeling like a changed person, religious and spiritual rebirth, the urge to create, writers and writing. The cautions include denying the growth that's beckoning in favor of social responsibility, not leaving when perhaps one should, having to seek permission from others before moving on, a loss of faith, feeling cast adrift from one's reality.

All in all, this is a very interesting new Moon. Perhaps it's best to focus on that light at the end of the tunnel!
